DEAD MAN'S CORNER MUSEUM

St Cômte du Mont

This museum opened in 2004 and tells the story of American airborne forces who dropped onto the Carantan peninsula in June 1944, and the German airborne troops who faced them. The building itself featured in the fighting, and inside is displayed a staggering array of airborne gear, including Major Richard Winters (Band of Brothers) uniform and combat gear worn on D Day!

There is also a good souvenir and bookshop, and a militaria shop selling a huge, and not unreasonably priced collection of WW2 gear from all nations.

One of the displays in the museum. Dick Winter's combat gear. Display in the roof! General view of Dead Man's Corner.

This got my vote as best museum in Normandy in 2006, and now in 2010 I feel exactly the same - it remains the best museum in the whole battlefield area and I never tire from visiting it. It is certainly well worth a look when visiting the St Mere Eglise area and/or Utah Beach.

It is open daily 10.00 - 18.00, but closed on Sundays between 1st September and 30th May. It closes for the winter between 23rd December and 2nd January.
