TOMMY GOES TO WAR
By Malcolm Brown
Tempus Publishing Ltd 2001 - ISBN 0 7524 2303 7
£12.99 paperback - 192pp - illustrated throughout
I bought this book when it first came out, not long after Malcolm Brown's groundbreaking and memorable Battle of the Somme film on BBC. At the time I was actively interviewing veterans myself, and Brown's approach, using personal accounts from interviews, letters and diaries, appealed to me greatly . I read the book again and again, particularly on the eve of a visit to the battlefields.
More than twenty years later the book had certainly stood the test of time, and this is a most welcome reprint of an old favourite. Brown was a 'Somme man', and much of the material in the book relates to those who fought on the Somme in 1916. Given that this is one of the most frequently visited and studied battlefields on the Old Front Line, then this will be a book few will want to be without.
This new edition has a number of illustrations not present in the original, is attractively produced, and a wonderful colour section of thirty colour reproductions of war art and photographs.
A great book, highly recommended, and Malcolm Brown at his best.
