FEBRUARY 17, 2005: FINALLY FREE OF YAHOO!

Since Yahoo! dreamed up even more annoying forms of advertising, I have finally decided to move my site to another server. I am hoping to come up with a new design (and plan to update to new code standards) for the site in the future, but there are presently a lot of other commitments. If anyone notices any major problems, drop me an e-mail at [email protected].

AUGUST 6, 2004: TRAIN FIRE

An engine on an westbound Amtrak train caught fire between Cresson and Gallitzin at approximately 8:40pm. Dispatchers at the Cambria County 911 Center activated Cresson & Gallitzin fire companies to handle the incident. Upon arrival, the Cresson fire chief reported that the engine compartment was fully involved. The on-duty Cresson Borough police officer requested Norfolk Southern police to the scene.

JUNE 21, 2004: TRAIN FIRE

Three lead engines of a freight train caught fire just west of the Rt. 22 overpass in Cresson Twp. (MP 252.1), at about 1:30am. Cresson Fire Department along with Cresson Township Police assisted at the scene. Dispatchers at the Cambria County 911 Center and at the Pittsburgh-East Center reported that two of the units were possibly fully involved.

JANUARY 20, 2004: LINKS PAGE HAS RETURNED

While I have yet to verify the links, the page has been added several months after it was "accidentally" deleted by Yahoo. By luck, I happened to find this back up copy, and uploaded it with the hope that most of the links are still functional.

SEPTEMBER 20, 2003: PASSENGER TRAIN FIRE

The lead engine of an Amtrak Passenger Train caught fire near the Cassandra Bridge just before 8PM. Fire Departments from Cassandra and Portage assisted at the scene. No reports of damages at this time, but it appears as though the train was taken to MO in Cresson.

JULY 8, 2003: JUST A NOTE

I want to make mention that I am not affiliated in any way with the "Railroad Overlook" Shop in Cassandra, which is not an official establishment of the town. I also do not state that railfans either patronize this private business or not.

APRIL 10, 2002: GALLITZIN TRAIN DERAILMENT

Two cars of a mixed freight train derailed at the Allegheny Tunnel in Gallitzin. The accident occurred at about noon. There were no injuries, and only minor delays in traffic.

APRIL 2, 2002: ALTOONA TRAIN DERAILMENT (PHOTO BELOW)

One man was injured after being pinned for a substantial period of time between his backhoe and the wreckage following a derailment near the eastern side of Horseshoe Curve. He was flown to Altoona hospital by medical helicopter following his extrication. His injuries were first considered serious, but not life-threatening. He is now listed in stable condition with a broken leg and ankle among other injuries.

An empty coal train derailed following a rock slide at about 4:30PM. Two other trains one with empty coal cars and an eastbound TV train also became involved in the accident when they collided with the wreckage. Sixteen cars in all were derailed.

Ironically, NS Spokesman Rudy Husband stated that the injured man was working on shaving the rock surface away from the tracks to prevent such an accident from occuring.

Emergency crews had to deal with two freight cars which were on fire and a brush fire which was ignited as a result. The fires were extinguished by 7:00PM.

Rudy Husband also reported that several pieces of rolling stock which were totaled in the accident will remain near the scene for a couple of weeks until they are cut up for scrap.
