NJ Transit train 3920 traveling to
New York derailed between Newark Penn Station and Secaucus Transfer. The
train had been stopped at Edison after a trackside hotbox detector detected
an overheating wheel. The train was tested by the conductor, but the
test showed there was nothing wrong. The wheel on Arrow III 1368 overheated
to the point where it came off the train, causing the derailment. |

A truck ran through a red light and crashed into
the side of Newark City Subway Light Rail Car 103. The truck punctured
the shell of the car and derailed it. |

Freight train bound for South Kearny Yard derailed.
Derailment caused major damage to catenary, cross catenary, and signal systems
on the Northeast Corridor. All Amtrak and NJT Newark Division trains
were suspended. |

A sanitation truck in a parking lot adjacent to the railroad tracks
backed into the tracks and the rear of the truck struck one of the rails,
causing it to shift. Metro North Train 55 to Port Jervis derailed
upon hitting the section of track. The engineer had slowed the train
from 60mph to 35mph upon seeing the damaged section of track ahead. |
