December 30, 1985 Hoboken NJT Commuter train rammed into concrete bumper at Hoboken Terminal. 54 Injuries
July 7, 1982 Fair Lawn CR Conrail/ NJDOT train bound for Hoboken was switched onto a siding at track speed by vandals.  The train crashed into Zerega Brothers Pasta Factory.  Comet I cars 1512, 1768, 1809 damaged. 1 Fatality

December 21, 1978 Somerville CR Two CR/ NJDOT commuter trains collided head on just west of Somerville Station. 11 Injuries
June 1977 Metuchen CR Manifest freight broke apart mid train, resulting in boxcars and hoppers spilling goods on the right of way. No Injuries
July 7, 1974 Belleville EL Two Commuter trains collided head on in Belleville.  The cause was believed to be confusion between train crew members. 31 Injuries

Montclair
EL The trucks of one of the flat cars on NY100 Piggyback train derailed in the Montclair Erie Plaza station, dragging a mile down the track, then derailed into several yards in Glen Ridge and Bloomfield.  It tied up commuter traffic for over a week on the Boonton Line.  The wreck raised such a furor that residents took the Erie Lackawanna to court and before the ICC.  The ICC ruled in favor of the railroad.

Long Branch

An eastbound commuter train on the New York and Long Branch derailed after hitting a bad section of track.  One E8 engine and five coaches derailed after departing Long Branch station.  It caused the Newark Star Ledger to launch their own investigative reporting into conditions on the line, nicknamed "The Life and Death Railroad."  The un-derailed coaches were uncoupled and pulled back to the Long Branch station by a CNJ GP40P.

A push-pull commuter train was leaving Raritan Yard, being lead by a cab car and pushed by a GP40P and GP7 #1524.  The GP40P was closest to the train with the GP7 at the rear of the train.  The track gave way under the GP40P, causing the GP7 to come loose and derail.

EL Erie Lackawanna commuter train X51 was deadheading a passenger consist when it was rear ended by EL freight train CX99 in heavy fog.  Comet I cars 1502, 1522, 1607, 1755, 1758 and U33C 3305 damaged. No injuries
November 4, 1972 Elizabeth CNJ Boxcar midway through CNJ freight train failed to clear the Penn Central NEC Bridge at Broad Street.  Resulted in destruction of of the station's northbound shelter. No injuries
November 16, 1970 Mahwah EL Eastbound freight derailed, blocking all four tracks of the Main Line.  Passenger service diverted over what is now NJT Pascack Valley Line and back to Main Line over now defunct connection between Spring Valley and Suffern. ?

The Owl (the last departure from Penn Station) derailed in Elberon while heading westbound towards Bay Head. The rear truck of the last coach (class P 70) derailed, tearing up about 2,000 feet of rail before stopping. CNJ Steam wrecker #5 was brought to the site to put it back on the rails.

SC 2 derailed in Montville, New Jersey on the Boonton line, just west of the US 202 overpass.  No injuries, but school bus traffic had to be detoured about 20 miles out of the way to get high school students from parts of Montville and all of Lincoln Park to Boonton.

Phillipsburg Drill parked at Port Morris.  The crew left the train unattended while going to lunch, and somehow it broke loose, eventually accelerating to over 60 miles per hour and it crashed head on into a 4 car electric train at Dover station, killing the engineer.  A GP 7 and an RS 3 were involved.  The lead GP 7 survived, while the RS 3 flew over the wreckage and was later scrapped.

August 19, 1965 Riegelsville PRR Freight X8634 South and freight X8916 North collided head on in manual block territory due to a misunderstanding of orders provided by Kent Tower. 4 Injuries

Signal system at Hudson Interlocking failed to report occupancy of a blocked track section.  Hudson and Manhattan K4 cars sideswiped PRR Road Switcher 8840. 2 Fatalities

H&M Train from Hudson Terminal rear ended train from Hoboken at Grove Street. 35 Injuries
September 15, 1958 Newark Bay Bridge,
Elizabethport
CNJ Train from Bay Head ran a red signal displaying Newark Bay Drawbridge had been opened and plunged into Newark Bay.  The first car of the train had been locked, and was not occupied at all, which kept casualties low. 47 Fatalities

H&M Train ran red signal and automatic train stop device failed, causing six car trainset to rear end a four car trainset just east of Journal Square. 22 Injuries

January 24, 1952 Hoboken DLW Multiple unit trainset undergoing repairs in Hoboken Yard broke free and collided head on with a train boarding on terminal track one. 1 Fatality

February 6, 1951 Woodbridge PRR "The Broker", originating in Jersey City was moving at speeds upwards of 50 MPH on a temporary trestle and curve.  The assigned limit was posted at 25 MPH. 84 Fatalities
