1982 Comet IIB Push Pull Coaches ordered from Bombardier
1982 GP7 Diesel Locomotives retired from passenger service
1983 Arrow II MU Overhaul
1983 F7 Locomotives purchased from Chicago and North Western
October 28, 1983 GG1 Electric Locomotives retired
1983-1984 Former CNJ GP40Ps upgraded to GP40PHs, equipped with HEP
1984 E60CP Electric locomotives purchased from Amtrak
August 24, 1984 Former Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western MUs retired
August 28, 1984 Arrow IIIs enter service on the Morris and Essex Lines
1985 Arrow IIs are isolated to the Morris and Essex Lines as they begin their descent.  Center door failures and chronic breakdowns begin- the cars can no longer run on the NEC. The cars run here until 1997. 
1985 Arrow IIIs swap places with the Arrow IIs on the NEC.  Arrow IIIs were needed to test the re-electrification to AC current on the M&E in 1984
1987 Comet I Push Pull Coaches overhauled
1987 Arrow I MU to Comet IB Coach Conversion by Bombardier
1987 E8 Locomotives retired
1987 GP40FH-2 Diesel Locomotives created by Morrison Knudsen from GP40 frames, cabs, and noses and F45 cut down cowl-bodies, numbered 4130-4144 on NJT, 4184-4189 on MTA
1988 F7 Locomotives retired
1989 Arrow III MU Overhaul by ABB
1989 ALP44 Electric Locomotives ordered from ABB, first order consisted of 4400-4414
1990 E60CP Electric locomotives retired
1991 GP40PH Locomotives (CNJ) rebuilt as GP40PH-2s by Conrail's Juniata Locomotive Works
1991 Comet III Push Pull Coaches ordered from Bombardier
1992 Former Pennsylvania Reading Seashore Lines RDCs sold to tourist line Cape May Seashore Lines
1993 GP40PH-2A Diesel Locomotives rebuilt from GP40s by Morrison Knudsen, numbered 4145-4150
August 27, 1994 U34CH Diesel Locomotives retired
1994 GP40PH-2B Diesel Locomotives rebuilt from Conrail GP40s at Conrail's Juniata Locomotive Works, numbered 4200-4218
1995 ALP44E Electric Locomotives ordered from ABB, consisted of 4415-4419.  E= extension
1995 GP40-2 Locomotives purchased from Conrail for work train service, numbered 4300-4303. 
1996 ALP44M Electric Locomotives ordered from ABB, consisted of 4420-4431. M= micropressor equipped
1996 GP40PH-2A 4148 rebuilt into GP40PH-2B 4219 following Secaucus Collision
1996 Comet IV Push Pull Coaches ordered
1996-1997 F40PH-2s upgraded to F40PH-2CATs with Caterpillar HEP sets at Conrail's Juniata Locomotive Works. 
1997 Arrow II MUs officially retired from NJT roster.  These cars were pulled from revenue service one set at a time.
1998 Hudson Bergen Light Rail cars begin revenue operation
1999 Metro North acquires two ex-Amtrak F40PH-2s: 370 and 382.  Converted to F40PH-2CATs at Norfolk Southern's Juniata Locomotive Works, numbered 4191-4192
2001 ALP46 Electric Locomotives ordered from ADTranz
2001 Comet V Push Pull coaches ordered from Alstom
2001 Diesel Locomotives ordered from Alstom
August 24, 2001 PCC Steetcars retired on #7 Bus Route- Newark City Subway
August 27, 2001 Light Rail cars begin revenue operation on Newark City Subway
2001 Comet II/IIB Push Pull Coaches rebuilt by AAI Corporation in Maryland to be compatible with future equipment.  All coaches/cabs rebuilt as trailers.
2002
AAI Corporation goes out of business.  Remaining Comet II/IIB Coaches rebuilt by Alstom.
2002
Comet I Cars sold in auction.  Buyers included Morristown and Erie Railroad.
August 2002 ALP46 Electric Locomotives enter into revenue service, at first only on Morris and Essex Lines.  They begin service on the NEC upon completion of the Montclair Connection, September 30, 2002.
September 2002
Comet V cars enter into revenue service.  Similar to ALP46 locomotives, at first only on Hoboken Division (they were on some of the last trains on the Boonton Line).  They begin NEC service 9-30-02.
